About the museum

Marskin Maja is the hunting lodge of Field Marshal Mannerheim, which Finnish soldiers built for their commander-in-chief during the Continuation War. The lodge was given as a gift when the Marshal turned 75 in 1942, and it was handed over to Mannerheim by a deed of gift on 5 June 1942. The lodge was designed by architect and Lieutenant Eino Pitkänen, who also designed its interior, apart from the textiles.

Originally the lodge and its farmyard stood near Rukajärvi in East Karelia, on the shore of Lieksajärvi. At the end of the Continuation War, in 1944, the lodge was dismantled and moved to the Finnish side, and its original builders re-erected it in Loppi on the shore of Punelia in May and June 1945.

The original hunting lodge now operates as a museum, presenting a piece of Finnish and Mannerheim history. The area also has a summer café, a restaurant for private bookings, function and meeting rooms, and a sauna.
