About the museum
Construction of the Korteniemi forest ranger’s farm began in the 1880s, when the state bought the land and a room was added to the residential house to accommodate the inspection trips of the officials of the Forest Administration. The buildings date from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and they stand in their original positions on the shore of Liesjärvi. The yard includes, besides the residential house, a granary, a livestock building, an equipment shed, a stable, a smoke sauna, a wood shed and a threshing barn.
The duties of the forest ranger included supervising the Crown forests to prevent forest fires, unauthorised felling and poaching, and assisting the forester. Metsähallitus (Forest and Park Service) has restored the buildings under the supervision of the Finnish Heritage Agency (Museovirasto), and today the farm shows how people lived there a hundred years ago: the living-room side was used by the forest ranger’s family, and the wallpaper with roses from the time when only forest gentlemen on their travels used the guest room has survived on the guest room walls. The farm is one of the nationally significant built cultural environments that the Finnish Heritage Agency has inventoried.
Korteniemi is the only forest ranger’s farm in southern Finland owned by Metsähallitus whose buildings and yard have survived as a complete whole. Endangered traditional habitats are managed on the farm by grazing and mowing, and old domestic varieties are cultivated in the fields by traditional methods. In summer, Finnish native breeds roam the farm: cows, sheep and hens.
