About the museum
The museum gallery opened in July 1986 and permanently presents the life work and output of the painter Andreas Alariesto (1900–1989). Alariesto was born in the village of Rieston in Sodankylä, which was largely submerged by the Lokka reservoir. Besides being a painter, he was a collector of folk tradition, a photographer, a craftsman and a songwriter.
Alariesto’s colourful, naïve paintings depict old Lapland and in particular the life, stories and way of living of Sompio. Almost every painting is linked to a story the artist himself told in the old Sompio dialect.
The museum was previously maintained by the Riikka and Andreas Alariesto Lapinkuvat Foundation together with the Municipality of Sodankylä. The foundation’s task was to look after the collection of 64 paintings that Alariesto donated to the municipality. In 2020 the artist’s life work passed to the Kauko Sorjosen säätiö foundation, which continues the museum’s activities.
