About the museum

The Kittilä local heritage museum, also known as Vaaranmikkola, is located in Pakatti, about four kilometres from Kittilä church village, on the banks of the Ounasjoki river. The buildings of the museum area are arranged in the traditional Peräpohjola-Lapland manner. The main building was built in the 1860s, and opposite it is a cowshed (navetta). The other buildings, namely a stable (talli), a storehouse (makasiini), a goods barn (tavara-aitta), a grain storehouse (vilja-aitta), a smoke sauna (savusauna), an outhouse (käymälä) and a niliaitta, are arranged around the courtyard.

The museum’s collections consist mainly of peasant objects from Kittilä from the first half of the 20th century, and almost a thousand objects have accumulated.

In the museum’s cowshed there is an escape room game, which can be played from Thursday to Saturday. Online there is a digital escape game as well as a virtual museum tour, in which the people of Vaaranmikkola present the courtyard and speak in the Kittilä dialect.
