About the museum
In 1986 Tove Jansson donated her Moomin art to the Tampere Art Museum, and her husband, the graphic artist Tuulikki Pietilä, donated her own print collection the same year. Thanks to these gifts, Tampere became home to the world’s only museum devoted to the Moomins.
The exhibition Muumilaakso (Moomin Valley) opened in 1987 in the basement of the Metso library building. It was on show there until 2013, and in the 1990s it drew nearly 200,000 visitors a year, many of them from abroad. Because of a renovation of the library building, the exhibition moved to smaller premises in the basement of the Tampere Art Museum on Puutarhakatu, where it remained until 2016.
Muumilaakso closed on 30 October 2016, and the collection moved to the new Tampere-talo. The museum was given the name Muumimuseo (Moomin Museum) and opened to the public on 17 June 2017. The museum belongs to the city art museums of Tampere.
