About the museum
The painter and artist professor Eero Nelimarkka founded the Nelimarkka-museo in Alajärvi in 1964. The museum building was built on the site of the old cowshed of the Nelimarkka family’s original homestead, and its plans were based on drawings by the artist’s friend, the architect Hilding Ekelund. Nelimarkka wanted to place the museum in the countryside, because in his view art belongs to the whole people, not only to city dwellers.
The museum’s core collection belongs to the Nelimarkka-Rahasto foundation (Nelimarkka Fund), which Nelimarkka established in 1945. The collection consists mainly of his production from 1910–1976 and individual works by other Finnish artists. The museum was extended in 1972–1974, became a municipal museum in 1981, and became the South Ostrobothnia regional art museum in 1995.
Since 2020 the museum has carried out the responsibility-museum role for art in the province of South Ostrobothnia. Alongside the works of Eero Nelimarkka, the museum mainly shows contemporary art from Finland and abroad. The Finnish Heritage Agency designated the museum area a nationally significant built cultural environment in 2009. The Nelimarkka-museo is also responsible for the activities of Villa Väinölä in the town centre.
