About the museum
The cottage of the Niitynpään työläiskotimuseo was probably built in 1892. It was originally a croft (torppa) of the Haapaniemi and later Haapalahti farm. The first residents were tenant farmers of the farm, and after them a police officer and a carpenter lived in the cottage with their families.
SOK (the Finnish cooperative retail association) bought the building in 1916 and housed its own employees in it. Long-term residents included the Rautiainen family, who lived in the cottage from 1929 into the 1950s. The nine-member family consisted of the parents, four sons and three daughters; the father and two sons worked for SOK.
The building has been restored on the outside to its 1920s appearance, and the interior follows the Rautiainen family’s flat in the 1930s. In the yard there is a log outbuilding containing a toilet, a woodshed and a storeroom. Jyväskylä rural municipality acquired the cottage for museum use in 1979 and opened it to the public in 1982. Since 2009 the museum has been run by the Keski-Suomen museo.
