About the museum

Pätäri farm is a typical late-19th-century Finnish farmhouse, which Antti and Valpuri Pätäri built on its present site. The main building's room (tupa) was brought from Säkkijärvi during the construction of the house. The farm's last master, Matti Pätäri, died without heirs in 1976, after which the farm and its yard passed to the state. Ylämaa municipality took it into its ownership in 1978.

The house museum opened in 1980. All the objects are the house's own original items, and they include tools and implements used in the everyday life of a 19th-century farm. In the yard there are five granaries: the shoemaker's granary contains a shoemaker's tools, and the grain granary dates from the 17th century. The yard also has a sauna, a threshing barn, a storehouse and a 1950s cowshed, where the Ylämaan kotiseutumuseo (Ylämaa local heritage museum), opened in 1983, operates. Its two exhibition spaces present objects relating to farming, flax processing, dairy farming, handicrafts, and fishing and hunting.

In 2014 lightning struck the house museum and caused major damage, and the City of Lappeenranta repaired the buildings. The city donated the buildings to the Ylämaan Kotiseutuyhdistys (Ylämaa Local Heritage Association) in 2019, and the association has begun the restoration and maintenance of the property. Most of the film Hiljaisuus (Silence) was shot at Pätäri farm in 2010–2011.
