About the museum
The Karjalan ilmailumuseo is located in the area of Lappeenranta airport. The museum was previously also known as the Kaakkois-Suomen ilmailumuseo.
The museum's two halls display fighter aircraft and objects, especially from aircraft of the Second World War. The basic exhibition includes, among others, the Saab 35 Draken, the MiG-21F and the Fouga Magister trainer fighter, as well as the Saab 91 Safir, a replica of the Nieuport 17, the Republic RC-3 Seabee and the Mi-8 helicopter. In addition, the Antonov An-2, the fuselage of a Mi-4 and the Vinka and MiG-21 cockpit simulators are on display.
The objects presenting wartime aviation history include, among others, the radial engine of the Fokker C.X aircraft that sank into Lake Saimaa, and parts of crashed Soviet aircraft, such as the engine and landing gear of a Tupolev SB-2 bomber that was lifted out of a bog in Ylämaa. The exhibition also features aircraft engines from radial engines to jet engines, anti-aircraft guns, scale models and dioramas.
