About the museum
Virolahti Bunker Museum is a military history museum in Virolahti, part of the Salpa Line, the largest defensive line in Finland during the Second World War. The Salpa Line was built in the 1940s to protect Finland's eastern border. At the museum visitors can explore concrete bunkers, trenches and gun positions, and the exhibition and the extensive open-air area illustrate the scale of the Salpa position and the everyday life of its builders.
The main building of the museum has two exhibitions on wartime. The indoor exhibition tells the history of the Salpa Line, its construction and armament, the work of the Lotta Svärd women's auxiliary organisation and Mannerheim's visit to Virolahti. The area's main attraction is the spherical bunker (pallokorsu), where visitors can stay overnight.
Virolahti municipality announced that it would end the maintenance of the museum, and in summer 2026 operations were taken over by the local company Wähäinen Oy, behind which are Jani Hellberg and Ari Vähä-Impola. The renovation of the museum continues. The museum café Vanikka serves during opening hours, and the Tuntemattoman polku (Unknown Soldier Trail) and Erämaan polku (Wilderness Trail), as well as the Salpapolku hiking route, start from the museum.
