About the museum
The Ikaalinen accordion museum presents the history of the accordion over some 150 years through instruments, photographs and texts. The collection is maintained by the Finnish Accordion Institute and holds almost a hundred accordions, the oldest of which date from the 1860s. The emphasis is on Finnish accordion building, and the collection includes, among others, models from the Kouvola and Vyborg accordion factories, as well as instruments made in the workshop of Sameli Elomaa in Kurikka.
The exhibition includes several instruments by the artist Lasse Pihlajamaa, which illustrate the innovations he developed for the accordion. Dozens of 19th-century instruments from Germany and Italy tell of the early history of the accordion. In addition there is extensive material on the fiddler tradition of Ikaalinen and on the Sata-Häme Soi festivals.
The actual exhibition is temporarily closed, because the former exhibition premises have been given up and the extensive collection has been put into storage until new premises are found. In autumn 2026 a reduced exhibition will open at the Hanuritalo owned by the institute, with the theme of Ikaalinen’s own fiddler tradition.
