About the museum
The Pernaja Agricola Museum honours the life's work of Mikael Agricola, who came from Pernaja. The exhibition tells of his path from childhood in Pernaja out into the world, of his embrace of Luther's teaching, and of his return as Bishop of Turku and peace negotiator. Agricola is regarded as the father of the Finnish written language: he translated the New Testament into Finnish and wrote the first books in Finnish.
The museum operates in the church village of Pernaja, in the Agricola House, a former primary school about 200 metres from the site of Agricola's birthplace, where there is a memorial stone. The Pernaja Agricola Society rented the school building, which had stood empty for a long time, from the City of Loviisa in August 2023, and the museum moved into the house from its earlier temporary exhibition venue in Koskenkylä.
The museum has a summer gallery, and coffee can be ordered for groups in the festive hall. The museum suits all ages and is free of charge.
