About the museum
The Pernajan veteraanimuseo is located in Pernaja church village, in a red-ochre building opposite the stone church. The museum was founded in 1997 and extended in 2004. It is a tribute to those who made sacrifices at the front and at home during the Winter War and the Continuation War.
The objects on display have mainly been donated by local war veterans and their families. On display are uniforms of soldiers and of Lottas (Lotta Svärd women’s auxiliary), wartime helmets, weapons, medals, insignia, backpacks, literature and photographs, as well as a model of a trench. On the shelves there are also wartime foodstuffs, such as coffee, coffee substitutes and sugar in their original packaging.
The most interesting part of the museum’s offering is the trench art made at the front. During the positional war, soldiers made utility and decorative objects from natural materials and metal in dugouts, such as jewellery, children’s toys, furniture and footwear. These are on display in the museum.
