About the museum
The Saaristomuseo is located in Rönnäs in the village of Isnäs, in the Pernaja archipelago of Loviisa. The museum is run by the Saaristomuseoyhdistys (Archipelago Museum Association), and it opened to the public in 1985. It is a cultural-historical local museum focusing on the lives of the people of the coast and archipelago.
The basic exhibition tells how the archipelago was settled and how farming adapted to the proximity of the sea. It illuminates archipelago livelihoods such as seal hunting, fishing and bird catching, as well as coastal sailing and pilotage. Behind all of these was the boat, which was the most important work and transport vehicle of the archipelago dweller.
The museum's boat exhibition presents types of wooden boats and boat-building techniques, for example the making of clinker-built and carvel-built boats. More recent boat culture is presented in the exhibition on engines and recreational boating. The museum's publication series Båtar publishes studies on boat themes.
