About the museum

The Pitkäpellon kotiseututalo is located about 18 km from the church village of Kangasniemi. It has operated as a museum since 1967, when the Kangasniemen kotiseutuyhdistys (Kangasniemi Local Heritage Association), which still maintains it, bought the buildings from Eino and Elli Huikko.

The museum consists of a farmstead with its main building, storehouses, outbuildings and windmill. The main building dates from 1826, and its logs and outer boarding were sawn and planed by hand. The building was originally erected as a smoke cabin (savupirtti), but was later converted into a building heated by an uloslämpiävä stove (a stove fired from outside the room). Inside are a spacious living room (tupa) with a large stove, a bedroom (kamari), a kitchen and a through-passage hall between them. A row of storehouses lines the yard, and two storehouses from Halttunen in Koskenniemi have been moved to the edge of the garden; one of them has the year 1767 on its gable beam. The farmstead also has a threshing barn, a cowshed, stable buildings and a log-built windmill from 1847. Some of the furnishings are original to the Pitkäpelto farm, and others were collected elsewhere.

In 1987 Pitkäpelto was used as a location for the Yleisradio (Finnish Broadcasting Company) production Dunckerin kersantti (Duncker’s Sergeant), which is set during the Finnish War of 1808–1809.
