About the museum
The Pienmäki farmhouse museum is located in Niemisjärvi, Hankasalmi, and represents a typical Central Finnish farm. The museum area includes about 20 peasant log buildings, mostly from the 19th century. The residential building was completed in 1849 and 1852, and the oldest buildings date from the 18th century.
Unlike in traditional open-air museums, the buildings have not been moved from elsewhere; they stand in their original places. A cart path leads into the yard, where visitors can explore the main room (tupa) and the threshing barn (riihi), and peek into the sauna, storehouses, stable, cart shed and smithy.
For the youngest visitors there is a Navetta activity space (Navetta-touhutila) in the cowshed, and sheep graze in the yard. Pienmäki farmhouse museum is a nationally significant built cultural environment. The museum is open in summer, and admission is free.
