About the museum

The Kangasniemi local heritage museum is located in a stone granary completed in 1913 in the centre of Kangasniemi. The museum was founded as early as 1954 by the Kangasniemi Museum and History Association, now called Kangasniemen Kotiseutuyhdistys ry, which keeps it open together with the Municipality of Kangasniemi.

The exhibition presents the livelihoods of the people of Kangasniemi, with an emphasis on agriculture and forestry and on home craft. Also on display is the equipment of the Kangasniemi pharmacy from the 1920s onwards. An interesting group is formed by the objects of the berry juice and lemonade factory: the merchant Viktor Topelius founded the berry factory in 1907, and its juices were exported abroad until a fire destroyed the factory buildings in 1915.

The museum also has a savupirtti (smoke cottage) moved from Soukkio, which was still inhabited in 1937. In the dim room visitors get an impression of the modest conditions in which many Finns lived just under a hundred years ago. Opposite the museum stands the Kangasniemi wooden church from 1815.
