About the museum
The Porvoon nukke- ja lelumuseo is a private museum in Old Porvoo, near Raatihuoneentori (Town Hall Square). It was founded by toy enthusiasts Evi Söderlund and Jorma Söderlund, mother and son, who began collecting toys as early as the 1960s. In 1974 Evi founded an antiques shop in Porvoon Linna on Jokikatu, and there was also room for a small doll museum in the shop’s back room.
In 1975 the museum got new premises at Jokikatu 14, when the family bought the property. The cold-storage rooms of a butcher’s shop that had been in the wooden building were renovated into a toy museum. Today the owners of the museum are Jorma’s children, Nina Aikala and Sami Söderlund.
The museum’s collection includes more than a thousand dolls and old toys from the 1800s to the 2000s. Most of the toys were collected in Finland, but they were mainly made abroad, and all of them were once played with. The exhibition is on two floors, where visitors can get to know the history of toys and share memories between generations.
