About the museum
The Raatteen vartiomuseo is located at the eastern end of the Raate Road in Suomussalmi. The guard building was completed in 1923 and is the only surviving border guard building built before the wars. The museum opened in summer 1988.
The building has been restored to its 1939 appearance. The museum tells of life at the border guard station before the Second World War, and of how the events of the Winter War on the Raate Road affected everyday life at the station. The station was used by soldiers of three different states: first Finns, then Russians during the Winter War, and Germans during the Continuation War.
