About the museum
Kaunislehto Farm Museum is an open-air museum in Hyrynsalmi, where visitors can explore the various buildings of the farm and life in Kainuu in the early 20th century. The old wooden buildings have a history of their own, and the museum’s guides talk about the area during opening hours.
The museum’s collections include an extensive range of pearl-fishing equipment. The freshwater pearl mussel (raakku) thrived in the clear-water lakes and rivers of Kainuu and was protected in 1955. The museum grounds also contain a tar kiln (tervahauta) and bloomery huts (rautahytit).
The area can be explored with a guide or independently using the QR codes on the site; independent visitors need their own smartphone and headphones. The museum shop is located in the vestibule (porstua) of the main building, and the museum can also be explored in the eMuseo service of the Finnish Local Heritage Federation. The museum is supported by the Kaunislehto Farm Museum Friends association.
