About the museum
Turjanlinna was the distinctive artist's home of the Kainuu writer Ilmari Kianto. Kianto was one of the most important Finnish writers of the early 20th century, and during his lifetime he wrote 67 works, the best known of which depict the lives of the poor in Kainuu. Turjanlinna was destroyed in a fire during the Winter War in 1939.
Some buildings have survived in the courtyard, and in summer they function as an open-air museum. The site is best visited on a cruise on the Kianta ship, where a guide tells the story of Ilmari Kianto's life and the history of Turjanlinna and introduces the courtyard. The walk around Turjanlinna covers about 400 metres.
