About the museum
The Suomen moottoripyörämuseo (Finnish Motorcycle Museum) grew out of the hobby and long collecting career of Riku Routo of Lahti. Routo organised his first exhibition of antique motorcycles in 1985, and in 2008 he bought the area of the old timber-drying shed of Niemi sawmill, where the museum was decided to be built. Cleaned reclaimed bricks were used in the building, and the project was supported by many companies.
The museum opened on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi on 28 May 2011. Its godfather is the Italian racing motorcyclist Giacomo Agostini, who has won 15 world championships. The museum is linked to Ace Cafe Lahti, which holds events every week.
The collection contains more than a hundred motorcycles: restored rarities, Finnish racing and hobby machines, and motorcycles and mopeds used in everyday life, each with its story. In addition to the bikes, the exhibits include props relating to motorcycling of different eras. The exhibitions change every year according to theme.
