About the museum
TAHTO is a museum and experience centre at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, presenting the history and culture of Finnish sport and physical activity. It is run by the Suomen Urheilumuseosäätiö (Finnish Sports Museum Foundation), which was founded on 2 March 1938. The museum receives funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture, and it describes itself as the only general museum of its field in the country.
The museum’s collections form the national collection of Finnish physical activity and sport. It includes about 36,000 objects, two kilometres of archives, 30,000 books, half a million photographs and thousands of volumes of magazines and newspapers. Material has been collected since the early 20th century.
The main exhibition The Story of Will (Tahdon tarina) is designed to be experienced with all the senses. It is divided into four themes: Changing Room, Helsinki 1952, Heroism, and Snow and Ice. Besides the exhibition, visitors can move about and try things for themselves in the Liikuntaseikkailu, which is included in the price of the museum admission ticket. The museum’s library and archive serve researchers and other seekers of information.
As a national museum operator, TAHTO reaches more than 100,000 visitors a year.
