About the museum
The Tehdas- ja alkoholimuseo Rajamäen Ryyppi is a museum of Finnish labour, industry and the history of strong alcohol, on the Rajamäki factory site. The factory was founded in August 1888 by chemistry doctor and engineer Wilhelm Juslin, together with other engineers and financiers, under the company Hyvinge Fabriks Aktiebolag. The factory was built in Hyvinkäänkylä in Nurmijärvi on the lands of the Rajamäki farm, and it produced compressed yeast, spirits, vinegar and ether. A village grew up around the factory, Rajamäki, with, among other things, a volunteer fire brigade, a brass band, a folk school, a church and a cannon tower. The factory passed into state ownership during the Prohibition era, in 1920.
The museum was established in 1963, in the factory’s 75th anniversary year, by Oy Alkoholiliike Ab in the old spirit distillery. The public was able to visit the museum only from spring 2017, because the alcohol act’s ban on advertising strong drinks had previously limited visits to special groups. The museum received its present name in 2019. The museum is owned by Anora Group Oyj, and the opening is the responsibility of the Nurmijärvi Museum.
The museum displays alcohol products that were previously not permitted to be shown to the general public. The exhibition tells, among other things, of home distilling, of Prohibition, of the Molotov cocktail and of European drinking customs. The premises are on four floors, and the guided tour lasts about 50 minutes.
