About the museum

The Nukarin koulumuseo is located in the first school building of Nurmijärvi, where school teaching began in 1873. The museum’s old classroom and a collection of objects gathered from the municipality’s various schools show what school was like in the past.

Teaching charts, fountain pens, handicrafts and objects related to school meals bring memories to older visitors and information to younger ones. The museum is close to the Nukarinkoski rapids, so a visit can be combined with a nature outing. The museum is run by Nurmijärven museo (Nurmijärvi Museum).

Good to knowThe basic guided tour covers the origins of the public elementary school system, the history of the village of Nukari and its school, and everyday life in elementary school. Tours are arranged by appointment, Monday to Saturday. The drama tour recreates a 1950s elementary school lesson: the day begins with a morning prayer, lunch is eaten in the classroom, and pupils stand up to answer.
