About the museum
Katvela is Ristijärvi’s oldest school building, completed in 1896. The Suojeluskunta- ja lottanäyttely (Civil Guard and Lotta Exhibition), run by Ristijärvi-Seura, opened here in 2003. Ristijärvi-Seura, founded in 1959, also runs the school museum.
The permanent exhibition tells of the time of Finland’s independence from a local perspective, as well as of Civil Guard and Lotta work and of the work of the sotilaspoika (soldier boys) and pikkulotta (little Lottas). A large number of original objects, photographs and documents are on display. In Ristijärvi, sport had a special place in Civil Guard work, and the exhibition includes numerous travelling trophies, personal awards with honorary certificates, and other sports equipment.
The school museum is a 1950s classroom called Koulu keskellä kylää (The School in the Middle of the Village), furnished with handicraft equipment typical of the period, and it tells of the history of the parish school system. In the yard is also Uutela, in front of which the Ristijärvi Civil Guard members set off for the Winter War, and which served as a field hospital during the war; exhibitions are now also held in Uutela. Katvela also has a handicraft shop and space for temporary exhibitions.
