About the museum
Tornedalens fiskemuseum is at Kukkolaforsen by the Torne River, about one mil (Swedish mile) north of Haparanda and right at the border with Finland. Fishing at Kukkolaforsen has roots going back to the 13th century, and dip-net fishing for whitefish (sik) is still carried out today from boats and pator (traditional fishing platforms). Over time, fishing has been food, a source of income and part of the culture of Tornedalen.
The exhibition Fisk och människa i Tornedalen (Fish and People in Tornedalen) is divided into three rooms. In the first, I fiskarnas värld (In the World of the Fish), visitors can see twelve fish species filmed under water, listen to the fish’s sounds in a sound shower, and get a virtual 3D model of the bed of Kukkolaforsen on their mobile phones. The second room is about fishing methods and equipment, from simple rods to large and complicated pators. The third tells of people and fish in Tornedalen: festivities, competitions and rituals around fishing, the disputes over who owns the fishing waters, and how fish is prepared and used.
The museum is run by Haparanda town and is part of Kukkolaforsen’s cultural area, where there are also preserved fishing huts, a clock tower from 1887, water-driven mills and a sauna museum.
