About the museum
Toritun Sepänmäki is a village smithy museum area in the middle of the village of Toritun in Padasjoki. The village has had a smith according to documentary sources since at least the 1700s, and the last smith was Juho Kustaa Kauren (1879–1955). The oldest buildings of the museum area date from the 1700s. Padasjoki municipality bought the property in 1982 and handed it over to the Toritun village association to manage.
The area has a main building from the 1800s, a granary, a sauna, a stable and a hayloft. The smithy and the laundry hut, which were demolished in the 1950s, were rebuilt on the same sites in the 1980s. The smithy is in operation, and blacksmithing demonstrations and courses have been held there. The property is under the protection of the Finnish Heritage Agency.
