About the museum

The Luopioinen local heritage museum operates in a three-storey former parish storehouse (pitäjänmakasiini) built in 1854 in the church village of Luopioinen, in Pälkäne. The museum and its crofter museum area were created in the 1950s by the Kukkia-Seura society and are now maintained by the Municipality of Pälkäne. The local heritage museum’s roughly 2,500 catalogued objects were mainly collected in the 1950s and 1960s from the area of the former municipality of Luopioinen. On display are, among other things, vehicles, fishing equipment, objects from the wartime shortages, a miniature model of the village centre from the early 20th century, a classroom of a travelling school (kiertokoulu) and furnishings. Inside the church next to the local heritage museum is a church museum, with rare wooden crosses, gravestones over a hundred years old and old church objects.

The Mikkelinmäki crofter museum is an open-air museum whose first buildings, Hirvelä’s pirtti (main room) and the neidon aitta (maiden’s storehouse), were moved to the hill in 1957. The area now has twelve buildings, moved from different parts of the former municipality of Luopioinen: Hirvelä’s pirtti, six storehouses (aitta), a threshing barn (riihi), a barn (lato), a smoke sauna, a cattle shelter (karjasuoja) and a windmill. Hirvelä’s pirtti dates from the early 19th century and Piia’s storehouse (Piian aitta) from the 1750s. The hill is an old sacrificial site, where there is an Iron Age sacrificial stone and a spring. In the museum area visitors can see traditional handicrafts, furnishings and rural life.
