About the museum
The initiative to found a car museum in Uusikaupunki came in 1982 from Juhani Linnoinen, managing director of Saab-Valmet, who argued that the town was well placed as a car-industry city. The Uusikaupunki car factory leased part of its site for the museum, the city council decided to establish the museum in January 1983, and the museum opened to the public in early February 1984.
The museum’s three exhibition halls hold a wide range of classic cars, from the Model T Ford to the hydrogen cars of the future, as well as objects from various areas of motoring and motorsport. Motorcycles and one aircraft are also on display. The place of honour goes to the first Finnish car, the Korvensuu from 1913.
The museum has its own section for Saab cars, which are closely linked to the history of the Uusikaupunki car factory, as well as futuristic concept cars by Finnish car designers from the 1980s to the present day. The development of the domestic car industry began in Uusikaupunki in 1969 and is documented as part of the collection. The museum also has a restoration workshop for the care and restoration of museum vehicles, and a museum shop.
