About the museum
The Uusikaupunki museum is housed in the Wahlberg house, which was built more than 150 years ago by Fredrik Wahlberg, founder of the Uusikaupunki tobacco factory. The house has preserved ornamental tiled stoves, ceiling paintings and hand-painted hall wallpapers, and the living room has a crystal chandelier imported from Italy.
The core exhibition on the upper floor tells the story of the town’s maritime history. On display are sailors’ chests, souvenirs, sea charts and navigation instruments used by captains, as well as information on shipbuilding and dockyard activity.
There are detective tasks for children, and the outbuilding has a shoemaker’s workshop and a play corner. The museum also has a museum shop.
