About the museum
Väinöntalo – Järviseudun museo was inaugurated in 1960. The museum was founded and its collection was largely assembled by local heritage counsellor Väinö Tuomaala, who worked as museum keeper until 1975. From its founding until 1989 the museum was owned by the Väinö Tuomaala Museum Foundation, after which it passed into the ownership and management of the municipality of Evijärvi.
The museum presents the life, everyday routines and celebrations of the lake-district peasant, old handicrafts, beliefs, and hunting, fishing and customs. There are 19 buildings on the museum site and about 20,000 objects in the collections. The basic exhibition was renewed in the early 1990s.
The main building, Alperintupa, is the centre of the museum; it houses the Muorinpuoti museum shop and a café. The site also has, among others, storehouses, a smoke sauna, a smithy and a windmill. In summer the museum holds exhibitions and events.
