About the museum

The Vallilan siirtolapuutarhamuseo is one of the smallest museums in Finland. It is located in Vallila, Helsinki, in the middle of an allotment garden on Mansikkapolku, where an original 1930s allotment cottage has survived. The cottage, only about 10 square metres in size, was designed in 1932 by town planning architect Birger Brunila and architect Väinö Tuukkanen.

The cottage and the small garden plot around it were restored in the summers of 2009–2010. The plantings of the plot follow the three surviving original planting plans drawn up for the Vallila allotment garden by garden consultant Elisabeth Koch. Several useful and ornamental plants of the 1930s are grown on the museum plot as voluntary work (talkoot).

The museum tells of the allotment garden idea and of the life of working people in Helsinki in the years of the slump. The purpose of allotment gardens was to offer families who had no opportunity to leave the city for the summer a chance to grow crops and spend the summer.
