About the museum
The Itä-Häme Museum was founded by the writer Maila Talvio, who was born in Hartola, and the museum opened on 30 June 1929 in the buildings of Koskipää manor. The museum is owned by the Itä-Hämeen Museoyhdistys ry (Itä-Häme Museum Association), and its collections cover seven parishes.
Koskipää manor was built in 1580. From 1677 the manor was owned by the Tandefelt family until the early 19th century, after which it was owned by the von Gerdten family. At its largest the estate covered about 25,000 hectares and included over a hundred crofts (torppa). The main building dates from 1828, and the mill, built in 1840, was moved to the museum grounds in 1965.
The museum's collections contain about 30,000 objects, of which about a tenth are on display. The permanent exhibitions include departments presenting manor culture and popular objects, the Vuoksenranta department, a smoke cabin and an agricultural museum, and the memorial rooms of Maila Talvio, Mika Waltari and Uuno Kailas.
