About the museum
The Vantaan maatalousmuseo (Vantaa Agricultural Museum) is run by Helsinge Lantmannagille rf (Helsinge Farmers' Society), a farmers' association founded in 1882 and one of Vantaa's oldest associations. The society began its museum project in the late 1980s in order to preserve the city's historical heritage, since the characteristic features of the farming community of the former Helsinki rural municipality were disappearing as Vantaa rapidly urbanised.
The museum is a bilingual local museum, in which objects and information about the former Helsinki rural municipality have been collected. The museum building, Emil, is built entirely of wood and was inaugurated in 2006. On the ground floor there is a permanent exhibition with large machines and equipment, as well as smaller items used in household work. The second building, Maiju, has been designed as a meeting and party venue.
The museum is located near Vantaankoski, the Kehärata (Ring Rail Line) and Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. It organises museum and local heritage events, such as the annual harvest days.
