About the museum
The Varistaipale canal was completed in the early 1910s as part of the Savo inland waterway, linking the waters of Juojärvi and Varisvesi. The canal is known for its four consecutive locks, where boats rise or fall several metres over a short distance. The four-chamber lock canal and the former farmhands’ quarters that now serve as a museum, together with their surroundings, represent the building and landscape-design styles of the 1910s.
The main building of the museum houses an exhibition on the history of the Heinävesi and Juojärvi canals, and the outbuildings display tools and pictures. The museum lies on the Heinävesi shipping route, near the Lintula and Valamo monasteries. The canal and the museum are maintained by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto).
