About the museum

The Säimen mill is located in the village of Säimen in Savonranta, which was merged into Savonlinna at the beginning of 2009. There has been a mill on the site since 1880. The present mill building dates from 1937 and was in operation until 1960. Power for the mill and for the generator that produced electricity came from the neighbouring Säimenjoki river.

Savonranta-seura (Savonranta Society) rented the mill from the Municipality of Savonranta for museum use in 1978, and today the mill is owned by the Savonrannan kehittämissäätiö (Savonranta Development Foundation). Much of the wooden machinery is on display in the mill building, along with the tools used in the mill. The building, which functions as a local heritage museum, also contains objects related to log floating, forestry work, and farming and housekeeping.

The museum area has buildings moved from elsewhere in Savonranta: Airaan tupa (Airaa’s main room), a smoke sauna, a smithy, a stable room (tallitupa) and a milk platform from the 1950s. A nature trail runs nearby, with a laavu (open-sided shelter) along it.
