About the museum
Vihti's museum activity began in 1959, when the Vihti-Seura (Vihti Society) founded a local heritage museum in a former loan granary. The museum became a municipal institution when the municipality employed its first museum worker in 1983. The museum's first basic exhibition opened in the summer of 1988 in the former Pikku-Pappila, and its premises later expanded into the old school building in Niuhala.
In spring 2022 the museum moved to Vihti's oldest town hall, located in the centre of the church village, at Kyläaukio 1. The renewed basic exhibition opened in May 2023. The exhibition presents Vihti through the stories of its people. Pikku-Pappila and the old Niuhala school are no longer used by the museum, and the Niuhala refugee museum has been demolished.
The museum's collections include objects, photographs and archive material. The collections have been catalogued in the Musketti database since 2002 and in the MuseumPlus system since 2022. The museum co-operates with other museums in Western Uusimaa and takes part in the national TAKO collection co-operation. The museum's website also presents the history of Vihti, a gallery of people, and the built heritage of each village.
