About the museum
The construction tools museum tells the story of the development of building work from the 1800s to the present day. The museum is located in a two-storey building in connection with Siikaranta-opisto and Hotel Nuuksio. The site has been owned since 1963 by the Suomen rakennustyöläisten liitto (Finnish Building Workers’ Union).
On the ground floor the technical development of the trade is presented, from log construction to today’s industrial element construction and new building materials. There is also a small display on the trade union activities of the sector.
On the upper floor the development of tools in different trades is followed. Stonemasons usually arrived first at the building site to make the foundations, and painters gave the final touch. The exhibition presents, among others, the tools of stonemasons, reinforcement fitters, bricklayers, carpenters, plumbers, wallpaperers, painters and divers. The tools have changed in design, material and technique of use, and many trades and tools have passed entirely into history.
