About the museum

The Viirilä local heritage museum is housed in the old buildings of the Gräggas farm in Kuninkaankylä. Ruotsinpyhtää municipality received the farm as a gift in the mid-1960s, and volunteers restored it as a museum. The museum opened to the public in July 1968. Since Ruotsinpyhtää joined Loviisa, the museum has been owned and run by the City of Loviisa, from 2010 onwards.

The main building dates from the late 18th century and was moved to its present site in the 1880s. The yard also includes an outbuilding built at the time of the move, a smoke sauna moved from the Penttilä farm in Ruotsinkylä in the late 1960s, and a building donated by Lapinjärvi that was moved to the yard in 1975. From the yard, there is a view of the farming landscape typical of Ruotsinpyhtää.

The museum’s collection includes about 3,000 objects. Most of them come from folklore collected by university students in the early 1960s, and there are also later donations. The objects depict the peasant and craft culture of earlier times in Ruotsinpyhtää parish.
