About the museum
Brofogdas is probably one of the oldest residential buildings in Lapinjärvi that is still in use. The name dates from the 1620s and refers to the bridge bailiff (brofogde), who supervised the upkeep of roads and bridges. The first bridge bailiff of the Pyhtää administrative parish, Erik Fransinpoika, lived in Lapinjärvi church village, and the house took its name from him.
The present building consists of two parts from the late 18th century: the frame is a single-room house (yksittäistupa) that was moved to serve as an extension of a bakehouse (pakaritupa) of the same age. During the ruote (rota) system the house served as a military official’s farm, the so-called vänrikinpuustelli, which the crown allocated for an officer to live in. From 1913 to 1957 the farm housed an agricultural school, and from the 1970s the house has been a local heritage house.
Today Brofogdas is owned by the municipality of Lapinjärvi, and it is used as a meeting and exhibition space by the veterans’ associations and the local heritage association. A small special museum presents objects from the 19th century to the end of the Continuation War. The Kornetin kamari (Cornet’s Chamber) displays uniforms of cavalry and dragoons, decorative military diplomas, photographs and a medal collection. The Korsunurkkaus (Dugout Corner) under the roof ridge presents handicrafts made by soldiers during their trench art work, and it also describes the ruote system.
