About the museum
The museum operates in the Jugend-style school building designed by architect Yrjö Sadeniemi, completed in 1912 at the northern end of the Ylitornio church village, in Alkkula. The building was originally a folk school.
The museum’s five rooms present the municipal school system and its development from folk school to comprehensive school, and from co-educational school to lower secondary school (yläaste). The exhibition also tells the stories of Ylitornio’s former village schools. Local further education has a room of its own: the Anna Jolman kasvitarha- ja keittokoulu (horticulture and cookery school), a Christian folk high school, a home industries school, the co-educational school and the adult education centre.
