About the museum
Sculptor and professor Yrjö Liipola (1881–1971) was born in Koski. He lived and worked in Hungary for 30 years and returned to Finland with his Hungarian wife Mara in 1934. In his old age the Liipolas moved back to Koski. Liipola donated his sculpture collection to his home municipality in the mid-1950s, and a museum building for the works was completed in 1970.
The art collection comprises about 210 works, the oldest of which date from 1900. Liipola is known for many monumental sculptures, including the Freedom Monument in Vaasa, the Kuru shipwreck memorial in Tampere and the Diana statue in Helsinki. The museum also displays furnishings from Liipola’s artist’s home, which tell of his years in Hungary.
Alongside Liipola’s works, the museum shows the varied output of Koski-born professor Olavi Hurmerinta, ranging from paintings to caricatures, as well as paintings, sculptures and woodwork by Martti Vainio. The gallery space hosts several changing exhibitions every year.
