About the museum
The Alpo Jaakola Sculpture Park is the former home and workplace of Alpo Jaakola (1929–1997), a largely self-taught artist born in Loimaa. Jaakola moved to the site in 1953 and built a cabin there from scrap timber. The painting studio was completed in 1964–1965, and most of the sculptures and buildings date from the 1960s and 1970s. The present café building is a former mortuary, which was moved to the park in 1968 and which Jaakola used as a sculpture studio.
In 1979 Jaakola moved to his new home and studio in Torkville, and the park was left almost deserted for about ten years. It was opened to the public on a trial basis in 1992, and the City of Loimaa bought it the following year. An EU-funded restoration was carried out in 2000. Alpo Jaakola and his wife Marja are buried in the park, as they wished.
The park also has a gallery set up in a former drying building, which shows the work of visiting artists.
