About the museum
The Montluel hospice was rebuilt in the mid-18th century after a fire destroyed the earlier building: work took place from 1741 to 1746 and the establishment opened in 1748. In November 1765, a pharmacy, or apothicairerie, was commissioned there. It was installed in 1765–1766 with furnishings from a Jesuit institution in Lyon: the woodwork came from the former apothecary of the Collège de la Trinité.
The pharmacy served the residents of Montluel until 1942, while the hospice itself operated until 1976. The décor has remained in place: carved woodwork in the Louis XIII style, a painted canvas ceiling, 18th-century faience pharmacy jars, bronze mortars and a games table commissioned in 1765.
Several items of furniture are listed as historic monuments, in 1966 and then in 2005. The entrance plaque refers to this listing, which concerns the movable objects and not the building itself. The site is now managed by the Comité Histoire et Patrimoine de Montluel and is open to visitors.
