About the museum
The museum was founded in 1854 at the request of the director of the Lyon preparatory school of medicine. It was first housed in the Hôtel-Dieu, with anatomical specimens bequeathed by the surgeon Marc-Antoine Petit. It bears the names of two anatomists from the Lyon faculty of medicine, Jean-Léo Testut and André Latarjet. In 1930 it moved to the Rockefeller estate in the 8th arrondissement of Lyon, together with the new faculty of medicine.
The collections left this site in 2015. Until 2021 they were kept in a warehouse in Rillieux-la-Pape, and then distributed among several storage sites in the Métropole. The opening of an exhibition venue in Rillieux-la-Pape has been announced for several years, without a specific date.
The holdings comprise about 3,000 objects (specimens preserved in jars, instruments, photographs, sculptures, medals, medical equipment) and about 1,500 old books. They include the collections of Ollier (osteopathology), Gall (skulls), Destot (radiology), Lacassagne (forensic medicine) and Testut (anatomy), as well as wax moulages, embryology and teratology specimens and skeletons.
