About the museum
The museum was founded in Épinal by the Conseil général on September 4, 1822 to house the collection of the Princes of Salm. In 1829 the Duke of Choiseul gave twenty-five paintings. From 1975 onwards the institution acquired important works from the second half of the 20th century, which gave it its character as a museum of both ancient and contemporary art.
A new, enlarged and restructured building was completed in 1992. The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003.
The collections cover archaeology, decorative arts, modern and contemporary art, fine arts, ethnology, history, photography, natural sciences, and technology and industry. Among the best-known works are “Mater Dolorosa” by Rembrandt and “Job raillé par sa femme” by Georges de La Tour.
The museum is currently closed to the public for renovation and refurbishment work, with reopening announced for 2027.
