About the museum
The museum was founded in 1907, when the town of Plombières-les-Bains received the estate of the painter Louis Français (1814–1897), with his house and collections. Born in Plombières, the artist was a pupil and later a friend of Corot, and was among the first landscape painters to settle in Barbizon. He was elected to the Académie in 1890.
The villa was designed by the architect Théodore Ballu for the painter; it has a studio with a glass roof (atelier à verrière). Local donations and objects relating to the trades, the economy and the thermal history of the town completed the collections.
On display are numerous works by Louis Français and painters from his circle, such as Corot, Courbet and Troyon, as well as drawings and natural history, archaeology and military objects. The museum has borne the “Musée de France” label since 2003. It is currently closed to the public for renovation work.
