About the museum
In 1887, Jacques Lobstein, owner of the Dommartin brewery, had the buildings of the future Grande Brasserie et Malterie Vosgienne built in Ville-sur-Illon, to better meet the standards of industrial brewing. Work was completed in 1900 with the malthouse. A fine residence, designed by the architect Clasquin, replaced the old premises in 1904. Around 1930, René Lobstein modernised the brewing and had an Art Deco brewhouse built.
The brewery stopped making the “Vosgienne” beer in 1956, and the company kept other activities until 1975. Part of the buildings became a museum in 1987, and brewing demonstrations have been held there since 1993.
The museum presents beer-making in the first half of the 20th century and bears witness to Vosges industrial architecture. It is run by a volunteer association, which also brews beer on site. Restoration work on the site is ongoing.
