About the museum

The Molsheim museum is housed in the town’s former Carthusian monastery, a listed historic monument since 1998. Molsheim belonged to the bishops of Strasbourg from late antiquity and reached its peak after the Reformation, when Jesuits (1580–1765) and Carthusians (1598–1792) were present. The museum was founded in 1946.

Its collections on archaeology, art and history trace the past of the Bruche valley from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The route continues outside in the monastic buildings, where four Carthusian cells have been refurnished in their original state, and in the great cloister, which volunteers of the “Chantier de la Chartreuse” are restoring.

The Bugatti Foundation, housed in the same complex, keeps the memory of Ettore Bugatti alive. He founded his car factory on the outskirts of Molsheim in 1909. The foundation displays cars, unusual objects and documents.
